Smoky Eye in 5 Steps: A Beginner's Guide Using Brittany Cosmetics Palettes

The Smoky Eye: Iconic, Timeless, and Easier Than You Think

The smoky eye is one of the most searched makeup looks in the world — and for good reason. It's dramatic, versatile, and works for everything from a night out to a polished office look. The secret? The right palette and a simple technique. Here's how to nail it in just 5 steps.

What You'll Need

  • An eyeshadow palette with matte and shimmer shades (we recommend the Eyeshadow Palette – Blitz)
  • A flat shader brush
  • A fluffy blending brush
  • Eyeliner (optional)
  • Mascara

Step 1: Prime Your Lids

Start with a clean, moisturised lid. Apply a thin layer of concealer or eye primer to help your eyeshadow last longer and appear more vibrant. This step is especially important for oily lids.

Step 2: Apply a Transition Shade

Using your fluffy blending brush, sweep a medium matte shade from your palette into the crease of your eye. This creates a seamless base for the darker shades to blend into. Use windshield-wiper motions for a soft, diffused edge.

Step 3: Build the Depth

With your flat shader brush, press a deep matte shade (black, dark brown, or deep grey) onto the outer corner of your lid and into the crease. Don't worry about being too precise — blending will fix everything. The Blitz Palette has the perfect deep shades for this step.

Step 4: Add Shimmer to the Centre

Using your finger or a flat brush, press a shimmer or metallic shade from the palette onto the centre of your lid. This catches the light and gives the classic smoky eye its signature dimension. The contrast between the dark outer corner and the shimmery centre is what makes this look so striking.

Step 5: Blend and Finish

Go back in with your fluffy brush and blend any harsh edges until everything looks seamlessly diffused. Apply mascara, and optionally line your waterline with a dark pencil for extra intensity. That's it — your smoky eye is complete.

Pro Tips for a Flawless Smoky Eye

  • Always blend more than you think you need to.
  • Do your eye makeup before your foundation — fallout is easier to clean up that way.
  • Less is more when starting out. Build intensity gradually.
  • A nude or glossy lip balances a dramatic eye perfectly.
