How to Make Lipstick Last All Day: 10 Proven Tips

There's nothing more frustrating than a beautiful lip colour that fades, feathers, or disappears within hours of application. With the right preparation and technique, you can make virtually any lipstick last significantly longer. Here are 10 proven tips for all-day lip colour that stays put.

1. Exfoliate Your Lips First

Dry, flaky lips cause lipstick to apply unevenly and wear away faster. Exfoliate your lips 2–3 times per week with a gentle lip scrub to create a smooth, even surface for your lip colour to adhere to.

2. Moisturise, Then Wait

Apply a thin layer of lip balm and allow it to absorb fully — at least 2–3 minutes — before applying any lip colour. Applying lipstick over a still-tacky lip balm causes it to slide and wear away faster.

3. Apply Lip Liner First — and Fill In

Apply a lip liner in a shade matching your lipstick all around the lip, then fill in the entire lip with liner. This creates a base that your lipstick adheres to and significantly extends how long the colour lasts.

4. Apply Lipstick in Thin Layers

Apply a thin first layer, blot with a tissue, then apply a second thin layer. This builds colour gradually and creates a more durable, longer-lasting finish than a single heavy application.

5. Blot Between Coats

After each coat of lipstick, gently blot your lips with a single layer of tissue. This removes excess product and oils that would cause the lipstick to slide, while leaving the pigment behind.

6. Dust Translucent Powder Over Your Lips

After your final coat of lipstick, place a single layer of tissue over your lips and lightly dust translucent powder through it. This sets the lipstick and creates a matte, long-wearing finish.

7. Choose the Right Formula

Matte and long-wear liquid lipstick formulas last significantly longer than glossy or cream formulas. For a glossy finish with better longevity, apply gloss over a matte base rather than wearing gloss alone.

8. Use a Lip Brush for Application

Applying lipstick with a lip brush rather than directly from the bullet gives you more precise, controlled application and allows you to work the product into the lip surface more thoroughly.

9. Avoid Oily Foods

Oily foods are the fastest way to remove lipstick. If you're eating, blot your lips gently with a tissue afterward and reapply a thin layer of lipstick.

10. Carry Your Lipstick for Touch-Ups

Blot any remaining colour with a tissue first to remove oils and residue, then reapply a fresh thin coat. This refreshes the colour and extends the overall wear of your lip look throughout the day.

Bonus: The Concealer Trick

Apply a small amount of concealer around the outer edge of your lip line with a fine brush after applying your lipstick. This sharpens the lip shape and creates a barrier that prevents the lipstick from bleeding into fine lines.
