How to Layer Skincare and Makeup for Maximum Glow
Share
The most luminous, radiant makeup looks aren’t achieved with more product — they’re achieved with the right layering. When skincare and makeup are applied in the correct order, with the right formulas at each step, the result is skin that glows from within rather than sitting on top of the skin. Here’s your complete guide to layering skincare and makeup for maximum glow.

Why Layering Order Matters
Each product in your routine serves a specific purpose — and applying them in the wrong order can prevent them from working effectively. Skincare products need to absorb into the skin before makeup is applied on top. Makeup products need a properly prepped base to adhere, blend, and last. Get the order right, and every product performs at its best.
The Complete Layering Order: Skincare to Makeup
Layer 1: Cleanser
Start with a clean canvas. Cleansing removes overnight sebum, residual product, and environmental pollutants that would otherwise interfere with everything applied on top. For a glowing result, choose a gentle cleanser that doesn’t strip the skin’s natural moisture barrier.
Layer 2: Toner or Essence
Apply a hydrating toner or essence to damp skin immediately after cleansing. This restores the skin’s pH balance and creates the first layer of hydration. The Brittany Cosmetics Radiance Boost Essence is ideal here — its brightening formula creates a luminous base that enhances the glow of everything applied on top.

Layer 3: Serum
Apply your targeted serum after toner. For maximum glow, choose serums that address luminosity and hydration:
- Vitamin C serum – brightens the skin and reduces the appearance of dark spots for a more even, radiant base
- Hyaluronic acid serum – plumps and hydrates the skin, creating the dewy, luminous quality that makes makeup look its best
- Niacinamide serum – minimises pores and evens skin tone for a smoother, more radiant canvas
Allow each serum to absorb for 30–60 seconds before the next step.
Layer 4: Eye Cream
Apply eye cream to the orbital bone using your ring finger (the lightest touch). The Radiance Boost Eye Care hydrates and brightens the under-eye area, creating a smooth, luminous base for concealer.
Layer 5: Moisturiser
Apply a moisturiser suited to your skin type. For maximum glow, choose a formula with a satin or dewy finish rather than a matte one. Allow the moisturiser to absorb for at least 5 minutes before the next step — applying makeup over a freshly moisturised face can cause it to slide.
Layer 6: SPF
Apply a lightweight SPF 30 or higher. For a glowing finish, choose a formula that doesn’t leave a white cast or mattify the skin. Allow to absorb before primer.
Layer 7: Illuminating Primer
An illuminating primer is the bridge between skincare and makeup — and the secret weapon of every glowing makeup look. It adds a subtle luminosity, smooths the skin’s surface, and helps makeup adhere and last longer. Apply a thin, even layer and allow to absorb.

Layer 8: Foundation or Skin Tint
For maximum glow, choose a foundation with a dewy or satin finish. Apply with the Foundation Brush using circular buffing motions for a skin-like finish. Apply sparingly — the more foundation you use, the more it obscures the luminosity of the skincare layers beneath.
Layer 9: Concealer
Apply concealer only where needed using the Concealer Brush. For a glowing result, choose a concealer with a luminous finish under the eyes rather than a matte one, which can look flat and dry.
Layer 10: Cream Blush and Bronzer (Optional)
For maximum glow, apply cream blush and bronzer before setting powder. Cream formulas blend into the skin and maintain the dewy quality of the layers beneath. Apply with fingertips or the Blending Brush.
Layer 11: Minimal Setting Powder
If you need to set your base, use the absolute minimum amount of powder. Use the Finishing Powder Brush to apply a finely milled translucent powder only to the T-zone. Avoid powdering the cheekbones and high points of the face — these areas should remain luminous.
Layer 12: Liquid or Cream Highlighter
Apply a liquid or cream highlighter to the tops of the cheekbones, brow bone, nose bridge, and cupid’s bow using the Soft Highlight Brush. This is the step that creates the signature glow — the luminous, lit-from-within effect that defines a truly radiant makeup look.
Layer 13: Setting Spray
The final step — and the one that pulls everything together. A hydrating setting spray melts all the layers of product into the skin, removes any powdery residue, and adds a final layer of dewy luminosity. Mist 2–3 times from 30cm and allow to dry naturally.
